Q: Is on-farm burial banned?

Yes! The burial ban was introduced in all European Union Member States in 2003. It was done to protect the health of human and animals as well as to safeguard the environment. Improper burial can cause pollution especially to groundwater due to gas and leachate production. This can increase the risk of transmission of disease to man, animals, birds, and insects.

Q: Can I bury my pet?

You are allowed to bury dead pets on your own premises, in an authorised pet cemetery or landfill site.

Q: What about wild animal carcasses?

Wild animal carcasses are classed as waste, and you have a legal duty of care to handle, store and dispose of them safely, so you don’t cause pollution or attract vermin.
